March 2023 Board of Education Meeting
Malia Poblete
The following board meeting took place during CCSD and HCSD Spring Break, so the general information below will be relatively shorter than normal.
Change is of the Essence
Following public comment at the opening of the November meeting that expressed concern about Agenda Item 9 regarding the Education/English Mastery Council, President Felicia Ortiz began her report of the President’s business. President Ortiz expressed her disappointment regarding the attendance and participation of the first School Start Times Workshop on March 9. She expressed her hope that more students, staff, and guardians take the time to participate in the next 2 workshops that are coming up. The next one will be on March 30 in Carson City and April 15 in Las Vegas, both can be live-streamed. If any of you would like to submit a testimonial for either meeting please send it to nevstuco.sboeducation@gmail.com. Fortunately, there was a rather uplifting part in her report as she expressed her pride in having a successful increase in Dual Credit and CTE courses in Nevada, and they will be making their way into more and more schools in the upcoming years.
Superintendent reported from Carson City during this meeting reporting her update on the Family Engagement Policy, and the successful participation so far.
Time for New Leaders
After approval of the consent agenda, we moved on to the election of the new officers for the upcoming term. The State Board of Education holds elections after every major election, every board member has the opportunity to recommend a fellow board member or themselves for a position. Member Hughes nominated President Ortiz for the Presidential Position and Member Katie Dockweiler for the Vice President Position. Both were unanimously agreed upon and are more than capable of leading our educational system to new heights. To conclude our elections the board decided to add a new “Clerk” position as they will be in charge of teaching and including new board members President Ortiz nominated Member Tamara Hudson for this new role, once again unanimous amongst the board.
Following the elections, we discussed the School Board start times. Starting in June all State Board of Education meetings will be held on Mondays at 2:00 PM with the exclusion of holidays. Once Summer comes around the meetings will take place on Mondays at 9:00 AM.
Reports
Item 9 and Item 10 were reports from Board Committees regarding the Education/English Mastery Council and the College and Career Assessment RFP (Request for Proposal). Both presentations can be reviewed with these links: English Mastery Council Workshop & College and Career Assessment RFP.
