Inside the NIAA Fall Board of Control Meeting: What It Means for Us as Students

The three NIAA Student Liaisons attended the recent NIAA Board of Control meeting to represent the student-athlete perspective and stay informed on decisions affecting Nevada high school athletics. Below is a summary of the major topics discussed and actions taken by the Board.

The Board discussed allowing students to participate in sports at schools other than the school they attend, including public-to-public, public-to-charter, charter-to-public, and charter-to-charter participation. Ideas included using distance, enrollment limits, or other predetermined criteria, as well as allowing students to attend another school if their current school does not offer a particular sport. There was significant opposition and concern about the challenges this could create. The Board approved a motion to send the issue to the Rules & Regulations Committee to develop potential regulations and language. No new participation rule has been approved at this time.

For football, the Board approved moving forward with a six-quarter participation rule. Students would be allowed to participate in a maximum of six quarters in one day, such as four quarters of JV and two quarters of varsity. The rule is primarily intended to support smaller 1A and 2A programs. The Board also discussed concerns about fairness and how the rule could affect different levels of competition.

The Board approved moving the Southern Nevada State Football Championships from November 24 to November 20, 2026, allowing the NIAA to maintain access to Allegiant Stadium amid scheduling changes.

The Board also revisited varsity spirit and cheer sanctioning. There were mixed opinions, with discussion focused on athlete safety, preparation, and recognition for cheer athletes. The Board approved rescinding the previous decision to fully sanction cheer and its state championship. The NIAA will continue sponsoring championships for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years while the future of sanctioning is evaluated.

For wrestling, the Board approved Rafter 3C Arena in Fallon, Nevada for the 1A, 2A, 3A, and All-Girls state championships, with 4A and 5A championships taking place in Las Vegas. The Board also discussed accessibility of  hotel discounts for schools traveling to competitions.

For basketball, the Board approved moving the 2027 state championships one week earlier to February 18–20, 2027, following discussion about dual-sport athletes and scheduling concerns.

Several future sport-specific rule changes were also discussed. Baseball will implement a double first base in 2027, while softball will allow one-way electronic communication between coaches and pitchers from the dugout. Track and field will make safety changes to throwing-event warmups. Girls lacrosse will continue discussing a potential 90-second possession clock; this has not been approved. Future NFHS uniform requirements will also require home girls lacrosse teams to wear white beginning January 1, 2031.

The Board discussed the potential use of iWanamaker as an official golf scoring and management platform. The system provides live scoring, tournament management, and rankings. Schools would pay approximately $100 annually, while the NIAA would not have a cost. No final implementation decision was made at this meeting. The Board also approved a $500 monthly increase for NIAA legal counsel.
